Magistratliche Warnungstafel gegen Laternen einschlagen (Magisterial Warning Sign against Smashing Lanterns) Anonymous, 18 th. c.
Civic Order
The warning sign against smashing lanterns was installed beside the main entrance of the city hall and acted as a deterrent due to the drastic depiction. In 1728, the streets of Graz were illuminated with lanterns for the first time. Since 1776, street lighting has been provided regularly. Street lighting is an achievement of municipal organization but it didn’t only serve the townspeople’s convenience and safety but was also a means of safeguarding law and order.
